Benghazi attack could have been prevented if US hadn't 'switched sides in the War on Terror' and allowed $500 MILLION of weapons to reach al-Qaeda militants, reveals damning report

Citizens Committee on Benghazi claims the US government allowed arms to flow to al-Qaeda-linked militants who opposed Muammar Gaddafi

Their rise to power, the group says, led to the Benghazi attack in 2012

The group claims the strongman Gaddafi offered to abdicate his presidency, but the US refused to broker his peaceful exit

The commission, part of the center-right Accuracy In Media group, concluded that the Benghazi attack was a failed kidnapping plot

US Ambassador Chris Stevens was to be captured and traded for 'blind sheikh' Omar Abdel-Rahman, who hatched the 1993 WTC bombing plot

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn't been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier.

'The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,' Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline.

She blamed the Obama administration for failing to stop half of a $1 billion United Arab Emirates arms shipment from reaching al-Qaeda-linked militants.

'Remember, these weapons that came into Benghazi were permitted to enter by our armed forces who were blockading the approaches from air and sea,' Lopez claimed. 'They were permitted to come in. ... [They] knew these weapons were coming in, and that was allowed..

'The intelligence community was part of that, the Department of State was part of that, and certainly that means that the top leadership of the United States, our national security leadership, and potentially Congress – if they were briefed on this – also knew about this.'

The weapons were intended for Gaddafi but allowed by the U.S. to flow to his Islamist opposition.

On September 11, 2012 armed terror-linked militias attacked U.S. diplomatic outposts in Benghazi, Libya, killing four Americans and driving the United States out of that part of the country

'The White House and senior Congressional members,' the group wrote in an interim report released Tuesday, 'deliberately and knowingly pursued a policy that provided material support to terrorist organizations in order to topple a ruler [Muammar Gaddafi] who had been working closely with the West actively to suppress al-Qaeda.'

'Some look at it as treason,' said Wayne Simmons, a former CIA officer who participated in the commission's research.

Retired Rear Admiral Chuck Kubic, another commission member, told reporters Tuesday that those weapons are now 'all in Syria.'

'Gaddafi wasn't a good guy, but he was being marginalized,' Kubic recalled. 'Gaddafi actually offered to abdicate' shortly after the beginning of a 2011 rebellion.

'But the U.S. ignored his calls for a truce,' the commission wrote, ultimately backing the horse that would later help kill a U.S. ambassador.

Filed under "well duh." Of course the Benghazi attack was preventable, just like thousands of deaths in Egypt were preventable, just like scores of deaths (so far) in Ukraine were preventable. Unsurprisingly, this spectacularly feckless so-called foreign policy of Obama's has led to all sorts of nastiness. Everyone knows this already.

At least, I would certainly think that they do.

Then again, maybe not. Maybe the trail of death and destruction is only just now causing people to peel the scales off their eyes and take off their Obama-colored glasses. And if that's the case, then the dogma of the Obama cult is much worse than I had previously thought.

But the idea that we allowed weapons to go to al Qaida is a hard pill to swllow. Is there any real proof of this?

Lanie, you have a good heart and often tend to over analyze things. I think you already know the answer to this question.

This old dead thread could use an update.

'Some look at it as treason,' said Wayne Simmons, a former CIA officer who participated in the commission's research.
What's Wayne Simmons up to nowadays?
Fox News National Security “Expert” Pleads Guilty to Being a Complete Fraud

In October 2015, a frequent Fox News guest named Wayne Simmons was charged with fraud for misrepresenting himself as a former CIA operative and using this fake biography to try to obtain work as a defense contractor. Simmons, who appeared on Fox at least 76 times, also identified himself as a national-security veteran in his appearances on the network, as you can see above. Simmons subsequently argued in a highly entertaining New York Times Magazine article that the reason there's no record of his work for the CIA is that it had simply been too top-secret to document. The Times mag article presented a number of reasons to be skeptical of this claim, and it now appears that Simmons has given up the fight, at least legally, and pleaded guilty to a number of crimes. From a Department of Justice press release:
“Wayne Simmons is a convicted felon with no military or intelligence experience,” said Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “Simmons admitted he attempted to con his way into a position where he would have been called on to give real intelligence advice in a war zone."
          Enjoy.

I'm not avoiding anything. Maybe you should take some of your own medicine.

The fact that Simmons is a fraud has no bearing on the fact that the slaughter in Benghazi could have been prevented.

I'd love to hear how. Did they ever address that in their attempts to attack Hillary?

                      The State Department's own words:

Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels
within two bureaus of the State Department (the “Department”) resulted in a
Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly
inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.

Security in Benghazi was not recognized and implemented as a “shared
responsibility” by the bureaus in Washington charged with supporting the post,
resulting in stove-piped discussions and decisions on policy and security. That
said, Embassy Tripoli did not demonstrate strong and sustained advocacy with
Washington for increased security for Special Mission Benghazi.

The short-term, transitory nature of Special Mission Benghazi’s staffing, with
talented and committed, but relatively inexperienced, American personnel often
on temporary assignments of 40 days or less, resulted in diminished
institutional knowledge, continuity, and mission capacity.
Hillary was a terrible executive and the administration was absolutely incompetent.

Furthermore, DS’s reliance on volunteers for TDY positions meant that the
ARSOs in Benghazi often had relatively little or no prior DS program management
or overseas experience. For a time, more experienced RSOs were sent out on
longer term TDYs, but even that appeared to diminish after June 2012, exactly at
the time the security environment in Benghazi was deteriorating further. It bears
emphasizing, however, that the Board found the work done by these often junior
DS agents to be exemplary. But given the threat environment and with very little
operational oversight from more experienced, senior colleagues, combined with an
under-resourced security platform, these agents were not well served by their
leadership in Washington. The lack of Arabic-language skills among most
American personnel assigned to Benghazi and the lack of a dedicated LES
interpreter and sufficient local staff also served as a barrier to effective
communication and situational awareness at the Special Mission.
Seasoned professionals were pushed aside to elevate political cronies and shows the continuing theme, these political appointees have no idea what they are doing.

To be honest, I couldn't make heads or tails of that.

What do we need to do to prevent something like that from happening again?

Gosh, did Fox have the ability to make executive decisions on deployment? Did they hold the reins when it came to response plans?

Wow! I had no idea they had that ability. I never watch Fox but based on your recommendation, I obviously should. Do they have viewer polls on national policy that affect executive decisions? That would be the coolest thing ever. So Clinton had no decision power here but Fox viewers did?

I really need to watch that channel.

FOXNews had the ability to vet the national security expert they put on the air as a national security expert. But they seem more concerned with just getting someone who delivers the right lines.
