It's 16° here this morning according to the local weather reports. The thermometer in my car says it's actually 14° here at home.
I have a programmable thermostat. It's saved me a bunch of money since I put it in. A year ago, during a particularly mild November, my electric bill was all of $61 for the month.
It's a fairly simple unit, called a "5/2," meaning that it's programmable for a five-day work week, and then a different program for weekends (when one would be home, presumably). So I have it set up to let the temperature rise inside to about 83°, then the A/C kicks on about an hour before I get home and it cools the place down nicely for me. In the winter, I have it programmed to let the temperature fall to about 55° inside. That's pretty unlikely to ever happen because it's seldom this cold around here. We have the occasional cold snap, but through most of the winter, the daytime highs are above freezing, and adding in the sun heating up the house during the day, the temperature generally just won't fall all that far. But, I'm not heating the house all day when I'm not here, so it saves a bunch of electricity.
Well, I got up a couple of hours ago after sleeping in a bit, ready to watch the parade, glad to hear that the balloons have a "go" in New York. I noticed that it seemed a bit chilly in the house, but I just attributed that to the very cold temps outside. Then a few minutes ago, I realized that it was colder still inside, so I went and looked at the thermostat. 59°! Then I realized: today is Thursday. The thermostat thinks that I'm at work, so it isn't running the heat, letting the temperature fall.
So, override turned on, the heat is returning, but I certainly feel like a bit of an idiot.
