Man Accused Of Stealing Grimaldi’s Bakery Truck, Making Scheduled Deliveries In Underwear
    May 21, 2014 7:15 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — If you’re going to steal a bread truck, you might as well go ahead and make the deliveries — right?

Well that’s exactly what happened early Monday morning when police said a Rockland County man hopped into a Grimaldi’s Home of Bread truck on Second Avenue near East 99th Street on the Upper East Side at around 3 a.m. and started dropping off loaves, rolls, and baguettes.

Wearing only his underwear, David Bastar, 30, of Nanuet is accused of stealing the truck that was full of $8,000 worth of baguettes, whole-wheat rolls and loaves of sourdough, 1010 WINS’ Derricke Dennis reported.

Bastar proceeded to make all of the truck’s scheduled deliveries.

Customers at Grimaldi’s in Queens said they couldn’t believe it.

“Very strange,” said Kew Gardens resident Karen said.

“He stole the truck and he made all the deliveries? That’s awesome,” said David.

“Yea I think it’s kinda weird that he would just go and deliver stuff in his underwear,” said Grimaldi’s cashier Isabella.

He was delivering bread at random places," bakery owner Joe Grimaldi told the Journal. "It was very bizarre...They were finding bread in front of their doors."

The thief also followed written instructions that had been left in the truck and dropped off baked goods to at least three places that were on the Grimaldi list.

"When I heard he actually made a few deliveries, I laughed out loud . . . I guess he really wants to be a truck driver!" a Grimaldi's deliveryman told the New York Post.

Bastar was pulled over and near La Guardia's Central Terminal and taken to Elmhurst Hospital's psychiatric ward because he seemed mentally unstable. He was later charged with criminal possession of stolen goods and released into the care of his parents
