  • Buying a rifle

I have put off buying a rifle for a long time and I was about ready to change that when Newtown happened and prices shot through the roof. So now I have seen the prices drop a bit and I think I will make a purchase in the next month or so. I have pretty much decided I am going to get a .223 SHTF semi-auto. I know AR's are the popular choice but I think I am going to go Ruger Mini-14 and I was wonder if anyone wanted to weigh in on their preferences. Price was a big driver for me.

    Thoughts, recommendations, opinions?

Not really in my wheelhouse. I'm a handgun and shotgun guy. I do know that the AR is so popular largely because it's been so well-refined over the years and it's very versatile, but that certainly doesn't mean that it's the best bet out there.
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now

Can't really go wrong with the Ruger.

Prices are pretty good, and there's tons of aftermarket stocks and accessories; so you can upgrade the looks and ergonomics incrementally, as more money becomes available to do so.

Mini14 is ok for target shooting. Small and loud enough for self defense in/at the house. Same effect as any .223.

I like the .416 Barrett but cant swing it around fast enough and remain standing after pulling the trigger in an off balance position. Causes Dx visits at the VA

          Let's back up a bit….

          1) What PRIMARY purpose is the rifle to serve?

          2) What's your personal experience level with shooting and have you shot other rifles of the types you are comparing?

          3) Do you reload?

          4) What are the State laws where you are (some are very restrictive, some not)

We'll start there and refine onwards.
          If it pays, it stays

            1) What PRIMARY purpose is the rifle to serve? - SHTF and target shooting....

            2) What's your personal experience level with shooting and have you shot other rifles of the types you are comparing? - Semi-regular target shooter... recreational pistol shooter... occasionally carry when out and about. Shot a lot of .22lr as a kid but not much rifle since... Did have a Norinco SKS for a while but did not put many rounds thru it although I liked shooting it....

            3) Do you reload? No...

            4) What are the State laws where you are (some are very restrictive, some not) Texas
