Toby Keith restaurant in Va. bans guns, sparks uproar

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - A new restaurant that recently opened in Woodbridge is sparking a Second Amendment controversy, especially online.

The restaurant named for country music star Toby Keith has posted a " No guns permitted" sign on its front door and gun rights supporters are blasting the restrictions on the chain's Facebook page. Some comments accuse Keith, who doesn't own the restaurant, of being anti-gun.

Virginia is a right to carry state, which means residents can openly carry a firearm without a license.
Man, how are we supposed to do oyster shooters with no guns? From a red solo cup?
    Enjoy.

Does the restaurant serve alcohol? Because it's my understanding that Texas, a gun-rights state if there ever was one, has had a no-guns law for bars since the Wild West days.

Any fool ought to get that liquor, gunpowder and testosterone are a mix almost as lethal as liquor, gasoline and testosterone. Hmmmm... maybe it's not guns we should ban.

None of the above. I don't give a shit. This is 800 miles away from me, in accordance with state laws, and Toby Keith has nothing to do with this place anyway.

Furthermore, I don't recall him being a big gun guy anyway.

Crowing about this is about as stupid as the crowing about him supporting Obama. Toby Keith has vocally been a life-long Democrat, just like his daddy and his daddy's daddy.

Virginia is an open-carry state. The law is silent regarding open carry in a place where alcohol is served or sold. It requires the owners'/operator's permission to carry concealed (with the appropriate licensure, of course) where alcohol is served or sold.

This is the same silly myth that was pushed here, and it's as untrue as the howls of blood in the streets after the so-called assault weapons ban ended.

I don't know about Virginia, but in Tennessee, it's illegal to be drunk anywhere with a weapon, whether that's in a bar or on the street or at your office (if it's open to the public during some set of hours). People screamed bloody murder when the state law was clarified that bar owners may restrict guns with proper signage, but that it's not illegal for someone to possess a gun in an establishment that serves alcohol if that person is not impaired.

That's been four or five years ago since that law was passed, and to date there has been exactly one case of a shooting in a bar: it was the owner of the bar shooting a musician long after hours, both were drunk, and outside of being drunk, the bar owner had the legal right to have a weapon on premises regardless of the law applying to patrons. So much for those shrieks about people getting drunk in bars and shooting the place up. Doesn't happen.

Huh. I would have thought he would have some rights regarding the use of his name.
          Enjoy.

Except this is Virginia, Counselor. Perhaps you have heard that different rules apply in different states.

Very limited. Toby Keith is not a restauranteur. He sold some naming rights. He has about as much say over the day-to-day operations of that restaurant as LP Building Products has over the Titans starting defensive lineup.

Does "nothing to do with this place" mean something different in your world? Clearly he has licensed his name to the place, and unless his lawyer is an idiot he has an escape clause he can invoke if they start doing something he doesn't want to be associated with.
                  Enjoy.

                    I see you've never owned a restaurant.

                      Get the fuck over yourself.

When this place starts pimping out pre-teens, let me know and I'll personally drive out West End Avenue and bang on Toby Keith's door and demand that he take his name off the restaurant. In the meantime, your silly trolling "gotcha" goes nowhere.

I don't get the hubbub. Why would the members of this forum have any issue with this restaurant banning guns. I don't get the "gotcha".

It's because all conservatives are drones who are incapable of independent thought, so we all listen to Toby Keith constantly when we're not taking our marching orders from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

Because boot in your ass, that's why.
