Suspect leads Denver police on high speed chase after allegedly carjacking auto with 4-year-old inside
    Published March 12, 2014FoxNews.com

A carjacking at a Denver area gas station quickly turned into a high speed police chase to catch the suspect who allegedly stole a minivan with a child inside.

A red Ford Edge was left running at a Longmont gas station with a pajama-clad 4-year-old boy in the backseat just after 6 a.m. local time, The Denver Channel reported.

The car was stolen from the gas station and, according to the Denver Channel, surveillance video showed a man wearing a yellow and black jacket there at the time. Police issued an Amber Alert with a picture of the suspect, who authorities identified at Ryan Stone, 28.

During the chase, a Colorado state trooper was seriously injured after being struck by Stone as the trooper put down stop sticks, devices designed to deflate tires and slow down suspects.

Authorities said the unidentified trooper was undergoing surgery Wednesday morning, and it was unclear whether Stone was trying to avoid the stop sticks, or if he intended to barrel into the trooper.

Stone allegedly carjacked two other vehicles during the chase, and was eventually captured on foot by police after fleeing one of cars when it slammed into another automobile and was rendered inoperable.

The 4-year-old boy was found safe and reunited with his mother.

At one point, Stone yanked a woman out of the driver's seat of a BMW and threw her to the ground, The Denver Channel reported. She tried to grab the door handle as he drove away.

No one else, including the boy, was injured during the ordeal, televised live during the morning rush hour.

Stone was wanted by police for failing to appear in court March 4 on a "dangerous drug" charge.

Stone has an extensive criminal record, including multiple drug and theft charges, The Denver Channel reported.

Longmont police spokesman Commander Jeffrey Satur said Stone was "definitely running like a person who did not want to go back to jail."

Satur said the boy's mother will not face any charges for leaving her son in the car.
A state trooper was injured and is undergoing emergency surgery.

I caught this on the radio this morning because I was trying to get to jury duty. What is disturbing to me is that the mother of the boy is a target of criticism - some of it vitriolic. She was getting gas, probably kind of late getting the kid to preschool and herself to work. She didn't lock the car or take the keys.

That's not ideal but it's a human sort of thing. Who expects a criminal attack at 6:30 a.m. in a public place? Not a lot of people. She wasn't in a bar for 2 hours. Her criminal boyfriend wasn't the attacker.

He is a career criminal and this is all on him.

The video was a live feed. The officer was injured but the video just went on following the suspect. They are saying they want some way to delay video when creepy stuff happens.

      Why?

If I am watching this kind of thing, why would I want the station to filter my viewing? I wouldn't watch this kind of thing myself but if others do, let them watch regardless of what happens. It's not a movie - it's a crime.

Was that at the end when the perp exited the third car?

I was watching on a local station and the commentary had a serious lag... then the local station here advised about the lag and cut the audio off and did their own commentary. They never mentioned an injured officer. I'm guessing it was off camera.

Too bad he didn't try to carjack someone with a ccp. It would have saved the taxpayers a little money.

The commentary mentioned that Colorado is a cc state.
Sort of implied 'hope' that the next driver would be carrying.

There's a difference between leaving the keys in the car and leaving the car running. What she did was stupid. Does she deserve to go to jail for it or anything? No, I don't think so. But if you leave your engine running at a gas station, it's literally an invitation to someone stealing your car.

I don't hate the mother. I'm not going to call her nasty names or excoriate her. But she's not getting a measure of my sympathy, either.

There's no difference in my mind. Certainly there's no difference in "steal-ability". She obviously left the car running because of the heater. While I personally believe that small children can endure a 2 degree temperature drop, I get the idea that a Mom would want the heater going for the 5 minutes it takes to pay for gas.
