Can't say I'm surprised. Before March 2020, when we stopped doing in-person court hearings, I used to have hearings in downtown San Jose. The area has been quite lovely for years, but between 2019 and 2020, I watched it go downhill rapidly. Businesses were just closing their public restrooms entirely, because laws say you can't deny access to people who aren't buying anything, so the homeless and crazy had taken over all the public restrooms. The owners couldn't keep them clean or safe. Filth, used drug paraphernalia, street people basically occupying them all day. One of those businesses was a formerly very nice Starbucks with comfortable chairs and free wifi and a nice patio...all trashed. After a few times of being harassed on the way in or out, I started bringing my coffee and breakfast from home. Just getting from the parking garage to the court building was like running the gauntlet.
