  • Joseph Franklin, shooter of Larry Flynt and Vernon Jordan, murder of 22, executed

(CNN) -- White supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin was executed Wednesday morning after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final requests for a stay, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said.

The execution, which had been scheduled for shortly after midnight Wednesday, was delayed for hours because of court appeals. Franklin was administered a lethal injection at 6:07 a.m. CT (7:07 a.m. ET). He died ten minutes later.

Franklin refused his final meal and gave no final statement.

He was on death row for the 1977 murder of Gerald Gordon outside a synagogue in St. Louis. He was blamed for 22 killings between 1977 and 1980 in a bid to start a race war.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon denied clemency for Franklin on Monday, saying he had committed "merciless acts of violence, fueled by hate."

In addition to the killings, Franklin admitted to the attempted assassinations of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt in 1978 and civil rights leader Vernon Jordan in 1980. Flynt, who was paralyzed by Franklin's bullet, has called for clemency for Franklin, saying "the government has no business at all being in the business of killing people."
    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I'm sure that's an admirable moral stance, but if it were I in a wheelchair because of this scum, the only change in his sentence I'd request would be to cripple the SOB instead and then put him back in prison.
"Since the historic ruling, the Lovings have become icons for equality. Mildred released a statement on the 40th anniversary of the ruling in 2007: 'I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, Black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life. I support the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.'." - Mildred Loving (Loving v. Virginia)

But the government should be in the business of trapping and caging people forever?

The Romans had the right idea: kick them out, take everything they hold dear, or throw them off a cliff. Pick one.

I'm sure we couldn't make that work, either, today but it's better than keeping people locked up forever.

Like the EPA would allow us to do 'Escape From Wyoming' for real. Now, I think people in Wyoming would be all for it if the area was to the east and if anybody could deal with escapees as they pleased.

Like the Cabela's shoe box says, "Everybody needs more practice" (those shoe boxes have handy targets on the bottom).

I can't believe he's been on death row since the 1970s.

He actually wasn't. He was sentenced in early '99 for the murder of Gerald Gordon, which had happened some 22 years earlier. He went through about a dozen different trials earlier, which was probably quite unnecessary. SOMEONE was going to convict him and give him the needle, so someone should have just decided who would off him first and be done with it. He probably would have been properly disposed a decade ago in Utah or Georgia, or possibly even Tennessee.

Anyway, whatever. Shithead is dead. He can no longer ever hurt another human being again. Good riddance.
