A permit to hunt a rare (listed as endangered) Black Rhino will be auctioned off at Dallas Safari Club's (DSC) meeting as wee speak. Some predictions put the possible gavel drop at $1,000,000 US.
Namibia started allowing a very select regulated hunting of problem post breeding aggressive male Rhino a few years ago. This will be the first time one is actually auctioned here in the US with 100% of the proceeds going back to the Rhino Conservation effort in Namibia. Namibia has been successful in protecting and actually increasing their wild Black Rhino population, the only South African country that can make that claim.
I personally saw 4 Black Rhino in the wild while in Namibia in 2010. Pretty awesome sight.
These aggressive males will kill other Rhino on sight, effectively being a danger to their own kind. It makes perfect sense to identify them, list them for offtake, and financially benefit to the good of the species. Hunting for the most part is about conservation and this is a perfect example.
My statement to the animal rights groups that are up in arms about this is simple. You get money from your idiot supports. Instead of spending on yourselves put your money together and outbid the hunters. But you better also be ready to move that Rhino somewhere to protect the rest of the wild herd.
