  • Police: Az. Teacher Takes 6-Yr-Old Girl's Shirt Off as 'Punishment'

An Arizona Kindergarten teacher faces 26 counts of indecent exposure and one count of child abuse after he allegedly removed a 6-year-old girl's shirt that left her naked from the waist up in a packed classroom.

Thomas Washburn, 54, who teaches at Adams Elementary School in Mesa, was arrested Wednesday when the incident reportedly occurred.

Police said something upset Washburn, who started shouting in the classroom filled with two dozen youngsters. The outburst frightened the victim and she hid her face in the top of her shirt, officers said.

The victim's mother said her daughter was born prematurely and is "developmentally delayed," according to a police report.

Officers said Washburn told the girl to take her face out of the shirt and when she did not comply, he went to her and completely removed her shirt, leaving her naked from the waist up in front of her classmates for about 10 minutes.

The girl broke down crying, police said. Washburn eventually returned her clothing.

When the victim's mother arrived after school to pick up the child, Washburn told the parent what he had done, police said. She was extremely upset and immediately contacted the principal's office, officers said.

Detectives arrested Washburn, who was taken to Mesa Police Headquarters for an interview. He declined to answer any of the detective's questions.

He was booked at that time for one count of child abuse and one count of indecent exposure. Police said at the time of the incident, there was one adult aide in the classroom.

On Thursday morning, detectives continued their investigation and added an additional 24 counts of indecent exposure, one for each of the students present at the time of the incident, police said.

The teacher was wrong but the charges are a bit much for what actually happened.

I disagree. i can't imagine what would compel a teacher to remove a female child's shirt in a classroom. And I don't know what the aide was doing. The principal should have been called immediately.

The teacher made a wrong decision and then realized it..I'm sure that's why he told the child's mom what happened. Too late though..he should never have removed the little girl's shirt.

          Why didn't the aide intervene?

When an adult forcibly removes enough clothing from a child to leave him or her naked in public in any way, there's a problem.

I don't know about the charges, either. It seems excessive. I'd rather see the teacher suspended without pay for the rest of the year. That's a 'teachable' moment.

I would shoot that man and no jury would ever convict me.

            NOBODY strips my little girls.

I disagree. He didn't yell at her too much. He didn't leave her in the corner for too long. He didn't spank her too hard. He removed her clothing. She's probably going to have scars for life for that one. I personally would have to ask the question of what type of person does it take to do this to a child.

Let's put it this way, if I was the parent you better hope the cops get you (generic you). You won't want me getting to you.

He did yell and he humiliated her in public. He deserves to be harshly punished but in a way that relates to the issue. The purpose here is to make him stop the behavior and to serve as a lesson to similar people in authority over young children.

Wage loss will do more than some fake pedophile/sexual charge. He got frustrated and he focused on her not as a sexual object but as defiant. He took her shirt away not to make her a sexual object or to revel in her childish nudity but to force her to look at him as an authority figure in a literal way.

It's stupid beyond belief because it's a dramatic loss of self-control but it's not a sexual attack. She won't be scarred for life unless adults constantly discus it in front of her or use it as a way of explaining her subsequent bad behavior (if she has any).

He should be punished for being out-of-control and stupid. He's not a monster.

Rape is not about sex, it's about using sex as a means of power and control.

This guy didn't force her head out of her collar, he stripped her in a humiliating way and made her stand there naked for 10 minutes. This crime is closer to rape than it is to overstepping enforcement of respect for authority.

He'd be dead if this were my daughter.

Pretty obviously, you've never been in a rape situation. I like and respect you so I'm not going get into this particular issue with you aside from saying that quite a bit of rape is very purely sexual.

This is story is not about that issue on either side of the fence.
