  • Jews ordered to register in east Ukraine

Jews in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk where pro-Russian militants have taken over government buildings were told they have to "register" with the Ukrainians who are trying to make the city become part of Russia, according to Ukrainian and Israeli media.

Jews emerging from a synagogue say they were handed leaflets that ordered the city's Jews to provide a list of property they own and pay a registration fee "or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated," reported Ynet News, Israel's largest news website.

    [....]

The leaflet begins, "Dear Ukraine citizens of Jewish nationality," and states that all people of Jewish descent over 16 years old must report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and "register."

It says the reason is because the leaders of the Jewish community of Ukraine supported Bendery Junta, a reference to Stepan Bandera, the leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement that fought for Ukrainian independence at the end of World War II, "and oppose the pro-Slavic People's Republic of Donetsk," a name adopted by the militant leadership.

The leaflet then described which documents Jews should provide: "ID and passport are required to register your Jewish religion, religious documents of family members, as well as documents establishing the rights to all real estate property that belongs to you, including vehicles."

Boy, howdy, I sure am glad that we really "reset" the global relationship by pulling out of Poland and the Czech Republic, and then demonstrated that we don't back up our allies in Egypt. That's some mighty fine foreign policyin' right there!

Hooray! Everyone in the world loves us now because that evil George Bush is gone and the wonderful, clean, articulate, swarthy Barack Obama is in office. Yippie!

History apparently has taught us nothing.

So what's the backstory on this that it shouldn't be taken too seriously?

A propaganda war being waged over events in Ukraine.

I am not saying it is untrue just that the claim is incredible demanding incredible proof and that this is the type of situation where finding truth can be very difficult. Anything coming out of this imbroglio should be met a skepticism that is proportional to the claim.

OK, so what would be satisfactory proof to you? I've linked the document, and my rather limited Russian tells me that it does indeed say what the article says that it says: that Jewish citizens over age 16 must register by May 3, 2014, their passports, religious papers (I'm a bit vague on just what that means), deeds, real property (they mean tangible assets here), and cars, and they must pay a "registration fee" of 50 dollars (they specify US dollars), in cash.

Fair enough. It seemed rather outrageous to me, and John Kerry has commented on it, apparently, so there must be some knowledge of it from the "boots on the ground". I was wondering if perhaps the organization putting out the flyer was a nothing organization, but if there is truth to this there really are some ticking time bombs over there.

I originally thought this was wishful thinking propaganda but after some more thought, I decided that it didn't matter if the document was an official document or agitprop.

If it's official, neither the regional populace nor the Jewish people outside of the area have learned a damn thing from history. Both secular and religiously liberal Jewish donors give boatloads of money to every left-of-center cause they can find all of which inevitably want to kill them or convert them to atheism. 'Never Again' apparently means just give us until the end of the week.

If it's agitprop, it's happening because a significant number of the population will be moved by it a positive (for that side) way. If Jew-hatred wasn't still pretty popular, they would have targeted some other group.

The Soviets waged a decades long war against Jews specifically and that legacy is obviously still a part of the popular imagination. The fact that both Muslims and atheist Chinese illegal immigrants are a real threat simply hasn't replaced the ever-popular appeal of pogroms.

Couldn't it be just put out to discredit the separatists?
                        Enjoy.

Doubtful. I don't think most of the population in that area would see this effort as evil and vicious. There are people on both sides who still have a cultural, Soviet-era antipathy toward Jews.

There are other, better ways to discredit the separatists which are currently going on.

By whom? Not us, obviously. Our Administration is completely impotent to deal with this. Who would step up? The Chinese? The Turks? The Norsk?
