  • Sorry, guys: Women may be better at multitasking

Anecdotal evidence has long supported the hypothesis that the fair sex is also the "do-a-bunch-of-things-at-the-same-time" sex. And now a study out of the U.K. helps to support the idea women are better at multitasking than men.

In a set of two experiments, psychologists at the University of Hertfordshire, the University of Glasgow and the University of Leeds pitted men against women to see if they could lend some scientific credibility to that commonly held belief that women are better than men at multitasking.

In the first experiment, 120 men and 120 women played a computer game in which they were asked to carry out two tasks independently of one another. Both sexes performed these individual tasks with the same speed and accuracy. But when participants were asked to perform the two tasks at the same time, women were quicker; their responses were only slowed by about 61 percent compared with the first task, while men's were slowed by about 77 percent. You're in good company because no humans are really good at 'multitasking'. Parents really can monitor infants and small children while doing something simple like folding laundry but that's it and it doesn't last.

Study after study has shown what we all instinctively know: multitasking is just switching among several tasks quickly. The more you switch, the worse your performance is no matter what your age or gender. Every time you switch, you waste time getting back on track mentally even if the waste is just a few seconds in simple tests. The more complex the task, the longer this takes.

No matter how long it takes, your focus and execution is much worse than if you had simply done one thing completely and quickly before turning to a new task.

Men can multi-task just fine. See? I can post in this thread at the same time that I'm -- ooooohhh! Shiny!
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now
