    Can TIME Predict Your Politics?

    See how your preferences in dogs, Internet browsers, and 10 other items predict your partisan leanings.

    Social scientists find many questions about values and lifestyle that have no obvious connection to politics can be used to predict a person’s ideology. Even a decision as trivial as which browser you’re using to read this article is imbued with clues about your personality. Are you on a Mac or PC? Did you use the default program that came with the computer or install a new one?

    My results:

    Liberal qualities
    You use a modern browser
    You prefer the Met to Times Square

    Conservative qualities
    You like dogs more than cats
    You prefer action movies to documentaries
    You think kids should respect authority
    You like a neat desk
    You think self-control trumps self-expression
    You're not wild about fusion cuisine
    You think the government should treat the lives of its citizens as much more valuable than those of other countries
    You don't think your partner shouldn't be looking at porn alone
    You think the world benefits from nations and borders
    You're proud of your country's history

    At the end you can fine-tune Time by disclosing your own self-identified political label. Oddly, both Libertarian and Other are detached from the other choices. For the record, Time slipped up again on the copy-editing:

    I don't think my husband should be hip-deep in porno whether I'm there or not.

    I prefer the Met to Times Square because I already live too close to Walt Disney and don't need to visit another one. I come from Miami, Fusion is... errything here. errrything.

    Messy Desk...what the hell did William F. Buckley have?

    Can't with Time. They're fuckin' stupid.

            Kind of rude, actually. Why the assumption that liberals like documentaries and art while conservatives like action movies and ... whatever Times Square is? When I was young, it was a very conservative adult was who turned me onto Nova (the show, not the guy).

              I actually thought that question was going to trend for conservative (the film one).

                I know there are documentaries that could be construed as liberal (although I disagree that everything that isn't toeing the party line is liberal) but really, what is political about something like Guns, Germs, and Steel? Other than refuting the white supremacists, I suppose.

                  I just viewed someone as preferring documentaries to today's Hollywood garbaje would be more likely conservative. But then again, in terms of documentaries, I was thinking about WWII films,as that's the kind of documentary my family always watched growing up.

                    I keep pushing Manufactured Landscapes which is the best documentary I have seen in years.

                    People usually tell me to shut up about it, now.

                        are you kidding? Ken Burns is a tool.
                        The year's at the spring
                        And day's at the morn;
                        Morning's at seven;
                        The hill-side's dew-pearled;
                        The lark's on the wing;
                        The snail's on the thorn:
                        God's in his heaven—
                        All's right with the world!

                            You know the only reason you got away with that is because it is too obscure.

                              A lot of the questions played to stereotypes.

                              I would like a clean, peaceful-looking desk no matter how I voted. I figure I've spent a total of 2 months and some odd days simply waiting while messy co-workers, bosses, or employees shoveled enough desktop shit around to find whatever it was that I needed.

                              Always the people who claim that they know exactly where every item is located. Right.

                              I prefer books (and more than one) to either documentaries or action movies.

                              My lack of enthusiasm about fusion cuisine has nothing to do with politics. I don't really like the meat to touch the peas so no way I'm going to be thrilled with dumping salsa on the sushi.

                              The dog thing comes down to interaction. My dog can help me look for hex screws at Home Depot. Good luck getting a cat to even get in the car without a big drama session.
