Nashville officials will take up an offer from the Democratic National Committee to apply to host the party's 2016 nominating convention.

CNN reported earlier this week that Nashville is one of more than 30 cities that have been invited to apply. In an email Thursday, Leigh Anne Sanders, corporate communications manager for the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp., said officials "are in the process of responding to the DNC that we are indeed interested in hosting the 2016 meeting."

"We are honored to be considered and look forward to pursuing the possibility," Sanders said.

Due to a conflict in dates, Nashville passed on an invitation to bid for the 2016 Republican National Convention.
This is the doing of our mayor, who has yet to find something he doesn't want to spend a shitload of money on. For those who don't know (which would be most people), Karl Dean wants to show off our shiny new convention center, which cost us $0.6 billion, and is so ugly it would scare a dog out of a butcher shop. That's not including the $678,000 paid out because they booked conventions in the place before it was ready, nor does it include the extra four million dollars a year in utilities costs that were wildly understated, almost entirely because all of the so-called "green energy" that was supposed to make the place relatively inexpensive to operate doesn't actually work like they said it would. And, of course, that doesn't include the cost of companies that were put out of business by the Music City Money Pit, which were several who were forced out of their existing locations, such as my auto mechanic. And, of course, that doesn't include the $128 million that the city frumped up to pay Omni to put a hotel next to the gigantic eyesore.

All of this in the name of the usual "if you build it, they will come" mentality that has proven wrong time and time and time and time again. When will these idiots finally learn? Three quarters of a billion dollars charged to the city credit card to try to beat Orlando and Las Vegas at the convention game, when everyone in the industry knew all along that would never happen, including the numerous cities who have tried this tactic in the past and lost.

So anyway, Karl has wanted to bring a party convention here for a while. Like everything else, he just doesn't care that it's almost certainly a losing proposition from a financial standpoit. Nor does he care that such an event will disrupt the lives of a whole lot of people AND will almost certainly kill off other tourism during that time period (late summer sometime), which is very big in Nashville at that time of year. Who wants to go on vacation somewhere that is overrun by by protesters of every stripe and the concurrent police in place to control them?

In short, he just wants a feather in his cap to say that Nashville held a party convention.

Please, PLEASE, Democrats, pick some place else!
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now

Dallas is trying to get the Republican convention.

Fort Worth will be the Free Speech Zone.

Both the R and D people out here want the Republican convention in Denver. Why not? We had terrific fun when the Democrats came. Work-wise, it was kind of a headache since we contracted to do some "extra" monitoring but entertainment-wise, it was a blast!

I liked the fake fights (Democrats posing as Republicans) and the little Anarchists best.

        From Tampa's Democrat Mayor.

Unlike the Republicans, the Democrats have placed restrictions on donations from big corporations. Mayor Buckhorn said he doesn't believe Bay area Democrats can raise the money needed and he refuses to have the city on the hook financially.

"I'm not willing to put the city at risk for tens of millions of dollars in contributions to host this event when we don't have it," Buckhorn said.
I thought one of the hallmarks of the Democrat Party was using other peoples money to pay for anything that contributes to the expansion of the Democrat Party. It looks like that in this case, the City of Tampa is not the right OPM.

How'd that lie pledge work out for them with their 2012 convention?
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.

And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

It made ZERO money for most local businesses, and cost many businesses business due to the "we'll do what we want" mentality that included closing down entire city blocks and closing off others.

And some idiot wants to bring the Olympics here. What the hell is wrong with these people? Remember the Stupidbowl? Locals warned the "world class city" boys that chances were that Superbowl would be on the coldest week of record, and that it would be really bad press for the area to show newsies, fans, and common folk running around in parkas with knit hats and gloves. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. Did Tampa get equal coverage four days later when it was 75ºF and gorgeous? Nope… the show was gone along with a lot of our tourists no doubt.

Why does every place that I live have to be the center of attention?

The party of the Democrats is not the Democrat Party and the Democratic Party is not made up of Democratics.

It's a proper noun. It is not childish to say "The Democratic Party is not democratic." It is childish to say, "The Democrat Party is not democratic." If you find it unbearable to refer to the Democratic Party by proper noun, then you can say, "The party of Democrats will meet in Columbus for their convention." It's more cumbersome, but you don't want to look like a fool, do you?
