  • Huh. Finally found someone who actually hates Barack Obama because he's Black.

Wolfeboro police Commissioner Bob Copeland did not answer residents calling yesterday for him to resign after he publicly called President Obama a racial slur.

    [....]

In the parking lot after the meeting, Copeland told one woman that when he called Obama “that f------ n-----,” he was speaking politically and not racially.

“The comment I made was directed at one single person. I have nothing but hatred for the president,” he said.

    [....]

The paper also printed a reply from Copeland, in which he wrote, “I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse. For this I do not apologize – he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”
    WOW!
It's been ten years since that lonely day I left you
In the morning rain, smoking gun in hand
Ten lonely years but how my heart, it still remembers
Pray for me, momma, I'm a gypsy now

Good for him. You ought to be able use any insult you like in a private conversation. I'm not speaking just politically, it could be your BIL or that stupid woman who always shows up at the park.

I think you can effectively ban some vulgar or racist labels in polite conversation, public speech, in the workplace, and in print but it's useless and wrong to ban those terms in private speech. People will just develop a new way to describe the people they despise and those new terms will eventually become offensive and "charged" and we're back to square one.

I expect that "nigger" will eventually drop out of the common lexicon but it will be replaced by something else to describe the same thing.

People who routinely use rough language are going to use it when they get exercised about topics. That's the reality and it's a good reason to curb or drop that habit. That pot you dropped on your foot isn't going to nark you out to the Thought Police but that lady in the parking lot might.

That said, I have no problem with people saying what they like privately. I might not want to associate with some people who speak their mind but that's okay.
