  • The tolerance fascists have already chosen their next target

    Amid the shiny, happy announcements of new features and new apps this week, file-sharing startup Dropbox quietly revealed another piece of news. Condoleezza Rice — Stanford professor, Iraq War architect, alleged warrantless wiretap supporter — is joining the board at the rising tech startup.

    Dropbox CEO Drew Houston didn’t mention the appointment during his keynote at a press event on Wednesday, but a day later, Rice’s arrival had eclipsed the rest of the company’s carefully crafted public event. Unsurprisingly, some people aren’t too happy about the move. Over on Hacker News, a leading barometer for what’s on the minds of tech geeks, the day’s most popular link connects to DropDropbox, a new site calling on users to boycott the company unless it removes Rice.

    The campaign’s apparently anonymous creators are calling for her removal in part because of her support for the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program, including claims that Rice herself authorized eavesdropping on UN Security Council members. “Why on earth would we want someone like her involved with Dropbox, an organization we are trusting with our most important business and personal data?” the site asks.
    These people have gotten a taste of blood, so the tolerance fascism will now blossom. They will not stop. They will now go about eviscerating everyone who does not hold an authorized opinion.

    Well, the silver lining to these pogroms will be that people shut up. After all, you really can't express a social or political opinion in the Internet Age since tastes may change radically 10 years down the line. Sadly, you are still on record with your 'unmututal' comments from years ago and now subject to purging. Maybe we can at least be spared the opinions of celebutards during the final days of Republic.

    Racism, feminism, sexism, family structure, food preferences, attitudes toward money, sex, or relationships are now all subject to political criticism. It doesn't matter that your attitude was tolerant or progressive for the time - it's not correct today.

      They've got to be kidding. Have they been asleep for the past two years?

        Do explain. I haven't kept up with her since she left government.

        I understand the concern. Why would you want someone who supported government wiretaps to snoop on private information on the board of a company whose purpose is hosting your private information?

        On the other hand, Dropbox openly admits to having the ability to look at your data now so it really isn't on the radar for people seriously concerned about privacy.

          Good news. Dropbox is standing up to the tolerance fascists, at least for now. Good for them!

              ..and enhanced NSA spying.

              As to Dropbox, does anyone else use it? My s-i-l sent our Hawaii vacation photos on it and it was continuously running when I would look at task manager. Now, I'm illiterate when it comes to most computer things. But my laptop was so bogged down and running slow that my husband told me to save all the photos in My Pictures and uninstalled Dropbox. That did the trick. No more slow running computer.
              May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
              Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
              And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
              may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

                Wouldn't it be a nice world if actual fascists did things like call for boycotts? Just imagine the Fasci Italiani di Combattimento writing vicious blog posts and Yelp reviews instead of tying people to trees and torturing them.
                Enjoy.

                  If only it weren't for the Left perpetrating so much violence, your statement might actually ring true.

                    Oh, has Dropbox been the target of violence by the left? I wasn't aware of that.
                    Enjoy.

                      No, just other people with whom they disagree. The fascist Left's violence is only increasing.

                        So, who was the "taste of blood"? Brendan Eich?

                          You make it very difficult to live by my own standard of not beginning posts with "Oh yeah, well you conveniently forgot about…" and "Well how about ….." or worse, the dreaded "If this had been conservatives… " scenario.

                          I am remembering when I was licensed with a large privately owned DC real estate firm. The owner of that firm was always trying to use the company to promote his politics and charities (social climbing) , and to draw in (some would say coerce) his employees and associates to participate in and support his causes. I accepted his right to do as he wished with his company even though I considered his use of the corporation and his personal staff to be illegal campaign contributions. As with all of my enemies, he is no longer in business. That's not because of anything I did, it's just the way it works. Everyone who has ever been mean to me has lost his job or business. Sit patiently by the river and your enemy will float by. That guy didn't exactly float by, though. He's still a grillionaire (which is amazing considering the trail of bankruptcies and corporate wreckage he has left behind him) but God will get him in the end.
                          The year's at the spring
                          And day's at the morn;
                          Morning's at seven;
                          The hill-side's dew-pearled;
                          The lark's on the wing;
                          The snail's on the thorn:
                          God's in his heaven—
                          All's right with the world!

                            Rather strange.
                            Robert Francis O'Rourke, Democrat, White guy, spent ~78 million to defeat, Ted Cruz, Republican immigrant Dark guy …
                            and lost …
                            But the Republicans are racist.
