    NBA Suspends Clippers’ Owner Donald Sterling For Life, Imposes $2.5 Million Fine
    April 29, 2014 2:26 PM

    LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be suspended for life and fined $2.5 million following racist remarks he made in a recorded audio clip.
    Silver spoke to the press at an 11 a.m. news conference from New York, stating he will “do everything in my power” to force the sale of the Clippers.

    “The hateful opinions voiced by that man are those of Mr. Sterling. The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage,” Silver said. “I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers association or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or decisions involving the team.”

    Silver said a forensic expert confirmed an audio recording taken by Sterling’s mistress, V. Stiviano, was not altered. In the clip, which was released by TMZ on Saturday, Sterling tells Stiviano, who is of African-American and Mexican descent, not to broadcast her association with “black people” at Clipper’s games. The audio clip was released shortly after she posted a picture of herself with Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson on Instagram, which has since been removed.

    I'm not sure I understand this. He's a bigot. So, he no longer has the good of his ownership? If the players are "convicted" of being abusers or druggies or thugs in the court of public opinion, do they also lose the good of their contracts?

    How does this work? Do fans with tickets lose their "good" if a lot of people think their FB postings are bigoted or sexist or whatever?

    This seems straight forward to me. The NBA has to protect its brand. Now you might not give a rats ass about overtly racists owners but the NBA has an audience that probably does.

      But he's apparently not overtly racist, judging by the surprise expressed by everyone. I think the allegedly private nature of his remarks should be taken as a mitigating factor here.

        I really haven't followed it that much. I figured it was like that Reds owner and this was just generic brand protection.

          If they have a morals clause to "protect the brand", shouldn't it already preclude some old guy from dumping millions on an amateur hooker(s) while he's married or settling his hooker divorce?

            Yes, brand protection...but using surreptitious recordings of an old man and his gold digging mistress. I find that a bit different than someone that publicly proclaims his/her racisim. Considering that he was previously fined for employment discrimination issues, I think that was more action worthy than this.

              Sure. But that didn't make it into the Two Minutes Hate.

              (That was a metaphor)

                BTW, it's always cool when I get the opportunity to be more of a cynic than you.

                  Oh, please. I'm mellow and wearing rose colored glasses...even picking up hitchhikers now. Cynicism is so 2013.

                    That is an unfair characterization. You have no basis on which to judge her level of professionalism.
                    Enjoy.

                      Point taken. I just assumed she didn't report it as professional income.

                        It will be interesting to see the league's reaction the next time some player makes a statement that could be construed as racist.
                        Of course, only white players will have to worry since it has been proven a fact by the Reverends Al and Jessie that a black person can never say anything that can be remotely considered racist.
                        We are so fucked.

                          May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
                          Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
                          And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
                          may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.

                            I'd rather watch Jews play basketball. Maybe he'll start his own league.
                            The year's at the spring
                            And day's at the morn;
                            Morning's at seven;
                            The hill-side's dew-pearled;
                            The lark's on the wing;
                            The snail's on the thorn:
                            God's in his heaven—
                            All's right with the world!

                              So would I. Most basketball players are inarticulate to point of being unintelligible (despite college) and a lot of them seem to be violent or criminally-connected or into gambling or sex-obsessed. Not all but a large number for such a small group.

                              I'd pay to see dentists or gymnasts play pro ball. It would be more interesting.
