A Pakistani immigrant allegedly beat his wife to death with a stick for making him the wrong dinner, a court heard.
Noor Hussein, 75, believed he had the right to discipline 66-year-old Nazar at their apartment in Brooklyn, New York, his defense said.

But prosecutors claim he murdered her because she had made the mistake of cooking him a vegetarian meal made of lentils instead of goat meat.

At the start of Hussein's murder trial yesterday, a court heard the victim was left a 'bloody mess'.

Court papers quoted by the New York Post said: 'The defendant asked [his wife] to cook goat and [his wife] said she made something else.

'The conversation got louder and his wife disrespected defendant by cursing at defendant and saying motherf***** and that the defendant took a wooden stick and hit her with it on her arm and mouth.'

Defense attorney Julie Clark said Hussein admitted beating his wife but said that in his home country, beating your wife is customary.

She argued that Hussein, who met his wife in Pakistan before the couple married and moved to Brooklyn, is guilty of only manslaughter because he didn’t intend to kill her.

In her opening statements at the Brooklyn Supreme Court bench trial, Clark said: 'He comes from a culture where he thinks this is appropriate conduct, where he can hit his wife.

'He culturally believed he had the right to hit his wife and discipline his wife.'

I hope he gets some traction with this. That way I can use my "what do you tell a woman with two black eyes?" defense. "Nothing, you already told her twice".

I guess this is something we'll have to start getting used to...the old "just muzzies being muzzies" thing.

Finally, from the article: "Court papers state he beat her with a stick that the family had found in the street and used to stir their laundry in a washtub." If I know this guy, and I think I do, I'd bet many dollars he waited until the wash was done before he used the washing-machine stick on her.

    Good grief.

Well, all cultures are not "equal" no matter how many women, girls, and babies get killed or maimed for our slavish desire to prove otherwise.

Culture does matter. Our own has many faults but there is no need to bow to the many faults of other cultures to set our own right.

Yes it is. We are a melting pot. Unless, of course, you don't want to have to give out abortofacients, or pay for birth control pills for someone else, or make a wedding cake for a relationship you don't support....

Not a very good one. But no worse than the gay panic defense, I suppose.

The original case on this that I'm aware of involved a Chinese man who beat his wife to death with a hammer for "dishonoring" him. It was wrongly decided then, and it's still wrong. Using the facts I recalled off the top of my head, I googled it and came up with a very interesting law review article: http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/students/gr...2.5.sikora.pdf.

There are certain misdemeanors that I think should be viewed with an awareness of cultural differences and how long the person has been in this country. I don't see locking up an immigrant from some backward country for catching and roasting stray cats; give him a ticket and explain we don't do that here. Murder is murder and American law shouldn't give a flying fuck about your Stone-Age bullshit culture of honor killing.
